I noticed that your tribe is doing exactly what i want to do. I am currently working on creating a may day event that will the an immersive dream play about the pursuit of alchemy. My goal for the play is that there will be only performers no audience, in that all who come to the play will be given some small task to do (such as holding a banner or doing a low single syllable chant. RIght now im looking for core performers to join me in the creation of this event using paratheatrical techniques. If it is all right I would like to message your group about this in hopes of finding more performers.

Greetings portlanders -

I just bought a supa' cute craftsman bungalow on NE 35th & Ainsworth, 2 blocks from the New Seasons and a walk or short bike ride to Alberta.

In the hopes of continuing to build and create community I am have a couple of ideas for how my home can be shared and activated as I will be needing some additional support with the mortgage.

The overall vision is that I would be living in the upstairs bedroom and living room would be my office/guest space, etc.

The finished basement is cozy, well lit, freshly painted, clean, with wall to wall new carpeting. There is a private room in the basement and a there is an entrance to the basement in the back of the house which feels like it's own private entrance because there is a door that closes to the upstairs portion of the house. There will be FREE wireless internet! The vibe will be high and filled with lots of creative juice!

Possible rental ideas:

- Finding someone who would be interested in renting the basement room as a daytime working studio space.
..........Healing, massage, office, crafting, therapy, limitless possibilities..... $300/month - negotiable

- Finding the right person to live in the downstairs bedroom while sharing the kitchen and bathroom - $400/month – negotiable

- Using the space as a node within the “under ground condo network”. Meaning that I would be willing to rent out the room by the week to friends/family who need short term space rental for whatever reason...... Advance notice is required since I travel quite often and would need to make arrangements in advance in most cases. Rates negotiable!

If you are interested or know of anyone who might be interested in any of these visionary scenarios....please send them my way.

I can be contacted via email or by phone 415.305.4142

Thank you all for the support! Though i'm sad to leave the Bay, my home for the past 15 years, I'm really excited to be a part of the portland community!!!

With love and blessings,

Hey gang.

It is with great pride and satisfaction that I announce the actual, irreversible Grand Opening of our new circus arts center, THE HIPPODROME.

In Summary: I'm doing the Grand Opening show November 17th. Starting that day, we'll have the space open during all days and some nights for classes, rehearsals, and performances. And we need the help of our amazing tech people to set up as much top-notch apparatus as we can squeeze in there, starting around October 20th.

If you've got a taste for details, read on.

What Creature and I have put together is a deal for a full-fledged circus venue, owned by my employer Mike Wolfson, housed in what was once the main room of the BComplex/MeowMeow/Loveland/Mercury Room/Euphoria. It's a 1000-capacity all-ages venue with a big stage, big PA system, 2o-foot ceiling, and big sexy exposed beams. This means that not only are we managing to avoid paying tens of thousands of dollars in renovation, insurance, and monthly rent; we are in fact pulling a salary to run the place. I'm the booker and Creature is the production manager.

So. There are a number of things we need to do to prepare:

I've got the Grand Opening scheduled for November 17th, with Batty's Hippodrome doing an 8-10:30 show and PURE Cirkus doing a much darker 11-12:30 show. Then I want to get a DJ in there (very likely Gypsy Sound System and Global Ruckus, who will already be playing next door).

The room will become available for all our nefarious plans circa October 20th. That means we'll have just under one month to set up whatever circus apparatus we want in the room for all our rehearsals, workshops, and performances. We have highly qualified friends who have offered to install first-rate professional aerial rigs, trapeze, and other hard-to-find trappings of the big top; though exactly what we'll have available when will be dictated both by constraints of time and budget.

Then, starting November 17th, the room will be available in the daytime and some evenings for rehearsals, classes, meetings, and performances. Creature will spearhead this operation in the same way I'll spearhead the show side of things, though both of us will surely be entangled in all of it. If you or anyone you know is looking for a place to practice/teach/study things like: aerial, juggling, fire spinning, dance, yoga, martial arts, tumbling, clowning, theater, or any other specialized skill within the broad definition of Circus; please let us know and we can find you a spot on the schedule.

Please do let me know if you can get in on this in any capacity. I'm sure we'll also need people to come and help us clean/build/decorate the place during that crucial 10/20 - 11/17 period as well, so even your totally unskilled friend can get in on the fun.

I called the album "Mind Bombin" not because im blowin people minds. Its is an ode to my youth growing up on the streets of the UK as a Graffiti deviant and yet it reflects the shifts in my socio/spiritual political outlook as i made my way out of the streets to the west coast of America.

BOMBIN; A QUICK CRASH COURSE IN DEVIANCY.

"Bombin" is a term used to describe going out and painting illegaly on a wall, train or some other form of private property. Bombin is a kind of fugitive act, claiming your personal presence amongst a landscape dominated by control and ownership. My crew and i known locally as T.C.K. (The Creative Kings) would go out on early morning Bombin raids to paint our newly created artwork on some pristine wall. The rush and feeling of accomplishment was addictive (as was dodging police), pushing the boundaries and refusing to live under the rule of law. The word would spread and before too long other Graffiti artists would come and check your work, creating both notoriety and respect. I was amongst an underground network of renowned artists that included the likes of Goldie (the now Drum & Bass icon), Madtempa (TRS) and Desire (TWC) to name a few.
In hindsight being engaged in this form of subversive activity gave me chance to look at and challenge the way our actions are governed and controlled. Most of us tend to simply accept these laws, unconsciously being given our prompts in life from a governing agent. Without challenging and in some cases breaking these laws we have no chance of discovering our own parameters as human beings and the full extent of our power. Our city streets, for example, the space some of us choose to inhabit, do not belong to us but those who govern us. We are in fact alienated from our own surroundings and our connection to time, place and earth. Individuality and personal presence are kept to a minimum in favour of efficiency and speed. The act of "Bombin" reclaims your space within the city and turns that which alienates and subjugates you into your freedom and your platform for expression.

MIND; DO YOU OWN YOURS?

Last year i went to hear a talk given by Chuck D, Public Enemys front man at Standford University. It was all great but one thing he said stood out to me.....

"Mind is the new Real estate of the 21st Century".

That stopped me dead in my tracks. Our attention is constantly being pulled at and fought for. Even if it for a split second if they have your attention they have you. Corporations and companies are constantly looking to set up shop in our minds with extensive media campaigns that play with subtle and not so subtle subconscious drives. In the same way that our physical space is controlled so too is our psychic space. In this type of environment i believe it is more important than ever to create autonomy over our own minds. The Mind is the last bastion of individual freedom, physical space being subjugated to the rule of law. But the more we let these influences into our minds and shape our behavior the more we surrender our sovereignty over ourselves.

This album for me is no different from those early morning bombin raids but instead of a pristine wall the territory instead is that of "Mass Mind", our collective psychic body, a landscape which is becoming more and more controlled by big business and less about the individual. Its definitely not about "blowin peoples minds" (i mean, please, im not that cheesy) but if it does that for you.....wicked. Its about the individual fugitive act of reclaiming personal power in the face of forces which do not want you to discover the fullest extent of your power, but to tap into it, siphon it off and redirect it. The mind when focused, empty (you try emptying your mind) and calm has no limits. You can do anything, make anything happen....truly......

.....but how deep does the rabbit hole go?

BreakBeatBuddha (a.k.a. Anthony Traynor) has been producing and performing for 15 years. His DJ sets are a blend of Hip Hop, Break Beat and Drum n’ Bass to which he adds live conscious lyricism which challenges the dance floor and politicizes the party.

He sees his music as both a calling, to those who are involved in the struggle and as an answer to our spiritual needs; to dissolve the illusion of separateness and to rediscover our collective body.

He has been creating waves on the West Coast of the United States now for some time and is constantly touring throughout the country connecting cultural resisters every where to promote social change through creativity.

There is an urgency and a strength to his music which summons us to be as powerful as we can be, to be fully alive.

".....Gots me an album out, entitled: "MIND BOMBIN", available for download from www.addictech.com for the hi res fanatics out there and also on I-tunes and Beatport......check da flex."

The following is a critique of a widely popularized book you may have bought yourselves. I wanted to post this here because there is a certain group that is being put under pressure to conform, and I thought some of you might find this a possibly interesting place in which to experiment with. Thoughts?

The following excerpts are taken from a most interesting forum (big on critical thinking to say the least) where I vaguely remembered this topic, then searched, and finally found this most interesting critique of a few aspects of the widely popularized "artist's book".

Whether your knee jerks in agreement or grey area wondering, perhaps you'll find "food for thought" in this critique!

excerpts from various posts found here (slightly edited for clarity, here) :
http://anti-politics.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=436&highlight=artists

Seen further down the thread:

"I'm making a warning that _The Artists Way_ (by Julia Cameron) is fooling people, neutralizing our intelligence, creating a confusion, pandering to our emotional weaknesses and exploiting our trust (of established authority), while promoting what all propagandists do--giving us something meaningful while at the same time making war and programming our intelligence in a certain, rigid, fear-stuck way."

Seen further up in the thread:

"The problem with this book... is that a value system is making covert war upon another value system, one which has been warred on systematically for hundreds of years. The author's method fits snugly into the pattern of authoritarian activity, and whether she knows it or not, is manufacturing the consent of some victims to make and perpetuate this war on other victims.

"One group, those labeled "crazyMAKERS", poses a threat to that order, and must be marginalized and made war on, via all the tricks at the disposal of the state--including using "well educated" folks as uncomprehending tools to implement its interests.[1] (Were the "bad" group to somehow get together in meaningful ways and articulate itself instead of only reacting [angrily/powerlessly] in a vacuum as any victim of state-originated attack is supposed to do, that would be *too threatening* [and has to be suppressed via the therapeutic jargon perpetuated uncritically in this book])

"The other group, that which is being helped a little, has been identified as a group that can be "reasoned with", since they hold (or have internalized) the values of the dominating paradigm. The state's architects and strategists don't necessarily "like" this group as fellow human beings (they are, after all, a militatry-centric organization), but this group [of artists, or persons who see themselves in such light] is an important resource, and thus is valuable (and may be allowed to continue to "thrive") for now.

"Notably, those being labeled "crazymakers" are not "making" crazy. They are humanly responding to pain that we mutually find as human beings living in this system. But their way of expression is more willful, and more distrusting of "The Way Things Are". Basically, the "crazymakers" are more something like "crazysurfers" or "crazyfeelers" because they are still angry at what is happening."

[End of excerpts.]

To continue with the above a bit:
...Whereas those being hyped-up to respond to their symptoms of dis-ease within the ideologically correct/therapeutic value system, are Good and Normal, and Appropriate!

Do take a read of the original critique at top and see if you agree in any way. Perhaps this will be something interesting and inspiring to those of us who are learning to question the "corral" of "normal" in the art "ghetto" today? (I'm not exactly optimistic, but thought I'd pass this by anyway)

NOTE to above excerpts:
[1] Check this out on "a good education" which discusses George Orwell's suppressed intro to his famous novel _Animal Farm_:
http://www.chomsky.info/interviews/20051207.htm
excerpt:
"...Nobody is ordering them to do anything. The indoctrination is so deep that educated people think they're being objective. Actually this is a point that Orwell made. You and everybody else has read Animal Farm, I'm sure, but you and everybody else hasn't read the introduction to Animal Farm. There's a good reason for that: because it was suppressed. The introduction was found 30 years later in Orwell's own published papers. The introduction to Animal Farm says look this book is a satire on a totalitarian state but I'm going to talk about England, Free England. In Free England it's not that different. Without state coercion unpopular ideas can be suppressed and are. And then he described how. He didn't go in much details but he said partly it's because the press is owned by wealthy men who have every reason not to want certain ideas to be expressed. But the more important reason, he said, was because of a good education. By the time you've gone through, you know, Oxford and Cambridge and here you could say Harvard and Princeton and so on, and even less fancy places, you have instilled into you the understanding that there are certain things that just wouldn't do to say, and that's what a good deal of education is. So the people who come out of it - and there are many filters, if people go off and try to be too critical there are many ways of discouraging them or eliminating them one way or the other. Some get through, it's not a uniform story. There are plenty of journalists with integrity and honesty. And many of them, some personal friends, will give a much harsher picture of the media than I do, because they have to live with it. But the basic points that Orwell made are fundamentally correct. The more educated you are the more indoctrinated you are. And you believe you are being free and objective, whereas in fact you're just repeating state propaganda."--curiously despised institutional analyst, Noam Chomsky

Rab is a master of manipulating our temporal awareness, leading us into seemingly ancient worlds, where to our amazement, we find visible shreds of the future. Allow his sound to catalyze your travels into haunting ecstasy, and you will not return to your same beginning. Playing only his own originally produced music live, the depth and craftsmanship of this offering is remarkable. With an array of drum machines, samplers, sequencers, and instruments, it is a clear devotion to expression and perfection. The beats are smooth, bold, and overwhelming. The original vocals, melodies and hitting bass merge seamlessly into a tapestry of unique and unexpected journeys."

Chairs and seating will be limited, but we want people cuddled on the floor anyway. I think one way that we can encourage greater use of the floor space in the EGG "awarehouse" is to make sure there are enough area rugs. Does anyone have one they can easily roll up and let us use for the night? Bring them down to the space before 8PM, if you'd like to help us out. We will love you and applaud your brilliance! However, I think everyone would prefer a non-playafied offering...
at the same time branish a weapon, in essence saying I will not kill
you.

The HeartHand movement was created by Portlander Jeff Stewart.
His statement that the world has evolved and is ready to move beyond
this ageold fearful tradition. His dream that the world embraces
HeartHand shifting from shaking hands with the right hand to the LEFT
HAND SHAKE as an expression of love to heal and create peace in the
world. He Believes we can all make a difference simply by uniting in
this simple yet powerful expresion of unity.

This is the live recording of our set at the Shambhala music festival this year in British Columbia, Canada. Its a mash up of psydub, ethno fusion, psydm, idm, prog psy and just a lot of great music. A huge thank you to all those who were there with a gigantic thank you to miss Saratonin for being our vocalist through this set. Congrats Sara! Oh and the most important shout out of all...to Lion-s and Hoola Hoop for having us!!

This mix was also VERY hard to compile, taking over 80 hours and four months. Compiling a cd with another person did make the process a long one, but it was also something we both really enjoyed. This mix was also the nucleus of the set Norris and I played at Motion Notion this year. As well, this version is an edited master, my mixer is on the fritz and once I get it repaired a new unedited final mix will be posted.

Good Evening,

I would like to invite you to The Know this Friday, July 14th for a sonic journey through the senses and the mind. Envelope yourselves in the essence of the seasons as your eye seeks out frequencies correlated to spring's effervescence. That aether now mutated onward and outward by the sun, a fiery beacon in the black. We set forward, prostrated to burn as the sun makes it's way across our brow. The auditory exchange is the vessel to re-connect as time shifts the relationships between the stars.

Come fill your ears with waves of sonic pyre. Soon enough they will be of liquid, filling our lungs into sleep and slumber.

"Motions Through Ambience", performed by Synchronicity Frequency
Friday, July 14th 2006
The Know - 20th and Alberta NE
9:30 - Free!

CD's of "Motions Through Ambience, V1.0" available at the show!
www.morphedproductions.com

This sound series, derived by the sensations of spring, will continue an ongoing process, a transformation of its form and style throughout the seasons. As one can imagine, the crispness of the spring air has influenced a bright and mesmerizing atmosphere, hungry for growth and stimulation. Performance will offer the ideal space for both performer and observer to indulge in the metamorphosis as a freely evolving experience, enabling the listener to take part in what has been a natural process for Synchronicity Frequency's music.

"I often find the compositions I write resistant to stagnation, by my own dissatisfaction with redundancy I often 'sabotage' my recordings by manipulating and transforming their character and texture the more I play and perform them." -RO

Rather than keeping this process a matter of private studio session or undocumented live material, SF will release a newly transformed version of the original 'Motions Through Ambience' to be able to be experienced as an entire work dusted by the essence of the seasons. The first version of release V1.0 was released at the end of spring. Throughout summer, witness "Motions Through Ambience" live at various locations. There you will experience the current affects of the season on the set and observe the new form it will be taking. At the end of summer, acquire the latest recording and transformation, V1.1. Fall and winter will work in the same fashion until the full cycle has met its node.

Dear MarchFourth Marching Band Supporter,

Do you remember your first MarchFourth experience? Perhaps you saw all 35 of us piled on our vintage fire truck, rumbling through your neighborhood. Maybe you were sitting in a club when the first few drummers spilled onto the stage, wearing harnesses reminiscent of “Mad Max.” Or you felt our energy pulse through the crowds during a parade. Perhaps you were among thousands of fans at the Blazers v. Lakers game, bedazzled by our halftime spectacle. You’ve seen us -- we’re ten feet tall (with stilts). We breathe fire. We overflow every stage, pack every theater, and lift every heart. We are the March Fourth Marching Band, we love what we do and we do it for you. If you’ve seen us, you certainly remember.

In three years MarchFourth has become established as one of Portland’s most sought-after performing groups, and one of the Northwest’s most successful. This summer will be packed with exciting performances throughout the West in cities such as Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Flagstaff, Durango, Denver, and others. However, the most notable performance of the season will also be the greatest challenge yet for our 35-person band.

MarchFourth Marching Band has been invited to the city of Hamburg, Germany, during the first two weeks of the 2006 World Cup Soccer tournament. This is an amazing opportunity to take part in the world’s largest international sporting event; we have seized the moment and are planning a tour of Germany from June 8 to June 23. Hamburg, our “home base,” is also the host city of the US Soccer team. We will be playing at two public viewing areas for US games and have scheduled nearly a dozen other performances, including parades, outdoor concerts, and stage shows in some of Germany’s hippest clubs.

Aside from expanding our global presence as a band, our objective is to represent the city of Portland as musical and cultural ambassadors. The people of Portland who’ve seen us play -- our fans -- have encouraged us to take this trip by being an essential part of every performance, by sharing their enthusiasm, and by simply dancing with us to our music. We are part of Portland’s emerging creative Renaissance, and we want to share our art with an international audience on the streets and stages of Germany.

Travel in Germany is most expensive during the World Cup, and this trip will cost us a bundle. Though MarchFourth has played often and saved enough money to buy our airline tickets (which were over $40,000), we are still short of the funds necessary to spread our uniquely infectious brand of northwest musical mayhem to the world.

We’re trying to raise an additional $30,000 to help cover day-to-day expenses, ground transportation and lodging, custom equipment cases, food, and of course, beer. This tour is a tremendously valuable investment in our future, and we are confident in our ability to entertain abroad as we have done at home. We are committed to making this trip a success, and you can be a part of the magic by making a contribution to the March Fourth Marching Band. We look forward to your partnership in this musical journey of goodwill.

Sincerely,

I'm writing about an event for the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS--www.maps.org). MAPS is a 501 (c) 3
non-profit organization whose goal is to promote scientific research designed to evaluate MDMA, other psychedelics and marijuana as potential prescription medicines, and to educate the public honestly about the risks and benefits of these drugs. MAPS has supported the following:

1. An FDA-approved study of the therapeutic use of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for people who have Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.
2. The efforts to implement a pilot study into the use of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy in subjects dealing with end of life issues, having end stage cancer.
3. A lawsuit against DEA for blocking a MAPS-sponsored facility to produce marijuana exclusively for federally-approved research

I'd like to invite you to join me at the "Telling the Truth" luncheon. This is a FREE lunch for people to come and learn more about MAPS. It is also a fundraiser. You will be asked to consider making a contribution, however, there is no minimum gift requested and as much as anything, we want people to come and find out about the great work done by this organization.

The “Telling the Truth” event will be on June 4th, 1 – 2pm, at the Masonic Temple located at 2777 Centennial Blvd, Eugene, OR.

If you are interested in attending, please RSVP with your contact information (name, address, email, and phone number) and you will be sent a "Save the Date" card in late May. I need the RSVP, as it's a catered event, and the organization will need to know how many lunches to serve. If you want to bring a guest, that's great; again, just let me know.

If you have any additional questions, or want to know more about this fascinating and important organization, please feel free to message me with questions!
Many people associate Valentine's Day with romance and having a
"significant other" of some sort to celebrate with. While we at Kaosmosis
are delighted in knowing that many folks will choose to attend Corazon
D'Amour with loved ones, we are not tailoring this event around "couples"
per se. Like all of our events, we are inviting EVERYONE to celebrate
together, regardless of the apparent dualistic relationship status of
being "single" or "in a relationship."

Corazon D'Amour is an event which invites participants to celebrate
whatever form of love they wish, be it for themselves, for the world, for
music, for art, for community, for chocolate, or for the love of
celebration itself. For those with more esoteric interests, we invite you
to explore the BIG love; the love behind the love; the love behind the
love that's behind the love; the love of existence.

Please note that the Euphorium performances will not repeat and the lounge
will be whisked away as the rest of the evening unfolds at 11pm.
The DAHOO CHORUS
The Dahoo Chorus has emerged as one of Portland's most exciting and
original musical projects, consisting of a charismatic and theatrical
20-person choir. The chorus also features some of Portland's best lead
vocalists, backed by a top-rate band
consisting of Dave Camp (guitar, Stereovision), Arthur Parker (bass, Trash
Can Joe), Ryan Moore (drums, Tripolar), Carl Tietze (keyboards, Solovox),
and funky brass section (featuring members of MarchFourth Marching Band).
After cutting their teeth on material such as Queen and The Beatles, the
Dahoo Chorus has turned it's expansive attention on developing original
music of an epic nature.

THREE LEG TORSO
"Both devilishly clever and damn beautiful" (Willamette Week), 3 Leg Torso
creates charming, elegant and daring modern chamber pop music infused with
equal parts tradition and innovation. Influenced by tango, Eastern
European folk and other world music traditions, their cosmopolitan musical
style embraces wit and humor within thoughtful, uncommon and beautiful
musical arrangements.
ROSWELL SISTERS (Bumphuk, Egypt)
If David Lynch were to make a film in a small town on Venus, the Roswell
Sisters would be the nightclub act. Unearthing the forgotten tunes of
1930's vocal jazz legends the Boswell Sisters as if they were some ancient
tome hidden deep in the Nile River Valley, the Roswell Sisters presents an
androgynous mix of three-part "female" harmonies set to an alien
soundscape painted by members of Portland's Trash Can Joe plus special
guests.

AURACLE DANCETRANCEFUSION is an exotic new collective dance company which
celebrates the dark and mysterious elements of feminine beauty. This
progressive ensemble unites East and West by combining ancient ritual with
modern themes. Sensual, provocative and sometimes shocking, an Auracle
performance invokes the archetype of the wild woman.

PABLIO DIABLO (Paul Plagens) is a Los Angeles-based singer songwriter who
performs sweet, upbeat, and catchy melodies about the dark side of
relationships. With his previous band Greta (Mercury Records) he toured
extensively and performed on The Tonight Show and MTV.

DJ SOL spins an eclectic mash-up mix of grooves, highlighting
juxtapositions and relationships between musical genres with an emphasis
on shaking your booty. Recently transplanted from San Francisco, Sol has
recorded and re-mixed for Shadow Records, Darla, Audiodregs and

MORE ABOUT CHOCOLATE AND VALENTINE'S DAY:
Every February, across the country, candy, flowers, and gifts are
exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is
this mysterious saint and why do we celebrate this holiday? The history of
Valentine's Day -- and its patron saint -- is shrouded in mystery. But we
do know that February has long been a month of romance. Today, the
Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine
or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred.

One story depicts Valentine as a priest who defied emperor Claudius by
allowing single men (considered better warriors) to marry by illegally
performing the marriages himself. Another Valentine may have been killed
for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they
were often beaten and tortured. According to one legend, Valentine
actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself while in prison (to
the jailer's daughter, signed "From your Valentine"). Although the truth
behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly emphasize his
appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure.

Chocolate is one of the oldest controlled substances on the planet, and
has long been prized as a source of spiritual wisdom, tremendous energy
and enhanced sexual powers. The Aztecs used the drink as a nuptial aid,
and, predictably, it was the favorite beverage at wedding ceremonies. The
Emperor Montezuma was reputed to get through fifty flagons of chocolate a
day, always fortifying himself with a cup before entering his harem.

Because of its renowned energy-boosting properties, chocolate was also
given to Aztec warriors to fortify them on military campaigns.
The Mayans also held huge celebratory rituals during the cacao-planting
season. One 16th-century Italian traveler recorded that during these
festivals "they used to spend all the day and half the night in dancing
with only cacao for nourishment".

Of even greater mystery is the connection between edible confections and
Valentine's Day. What has been sacrificed in the name of love and
chocolate? On February 17th, Kaosmosis invites you to participate in
unraveling the curious bittersweet romance of life with an evening of
music, art, performance, dance, love, and ...chocolate!

www.wonderballroom.com

KAOSMOSIS

Hello everyone. We are excited to present our next show at the beautiful
Wonder Ballroom. We would also like to apologize for some of the chaos
and challenged execution of production at our last event "The Yeti Snowball."
It had been over a year since we had done a warehouse-style event
(meaning: renting a large non-commercial venue with no working
infrastructure). After the Bossanova was sold, we had to scramble to find
a venue on short notice, and Audio Cinema was our only choice. The end
result was quite a bit more work than we were expecting, and we had some
unforeseen problems with the entrance line, water, etc..

Moving forward, we are relieved to be producing our upcoming event at
Wonder Ballroom. They have a great staff, and the venue has huge
potential. Of important note is that Wonder Ballroom has a contract with
Ticketmaster, which charges a "service charge" on all tickets. While this
will make ticket purchases easier, our normal $15 ticket will probably
have an additional $3 added. HOWEVER, by special arrangement with Wonder
Ballroom, we will have a limited number of $15 tickets available (with no
service charge) at our normal ticket outlets in advance (see below).
These tickets will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis
beginning Wednesday, February 1st). We thank you for your patience and
continued support!

My apologies if this comes across as spam. I felt this a good place to let people know about this show. Below is the info. This is an unofficial fundraiser for Camp FYB.

Join us this coming Tuesday February 14th at Pala for a special night of music and moods. Featuring KJ Sawka (Live). Seeing Kevin Sawka on the drums is the only way to believe the hype. He can play the most complex of jungle, drum'n'bass and breakbeats utilizing no loops and no extended samples -only his two hands and two feet. Whereas some artists claim to be performing live drum'n'bass, live electronica, etc., it's more often than not a drummer playing alongside pre-programmed beats if there's a drummer at all; Sawka, however, can perform each and every 808 bass kick, snare slap, and compressed highhat tick himself, in real-time.

10 years ago -when drum'n'bass was very near it's zenith in popularity, and Kevin was playing in prominent rock bands in Seattle (grunge was huge)- someone played him an LTJ Bukem track, and, as he says, "It scorched my brain. I dropped everything, and focused solely on how to recreate that on the drums." He heard Dieselboy as well. More brain-scorching. He started writing utilizing the style, and honed his new concepts and approach to the drums. He debuted the new sound in the band 94th Street, a band years ahead of it's time: a pop drum'n'bass band with a sense of humor. While the band didn't gain much momentum, the word about Kevin was out: there's a drummer in Seattle who's performing jungle and drum'n'bass beats on acoustic drums, what was once thought to be absolutely impossible by any human. And here Kevin was making it look easy -like watching a jazz drummer who's said to play "like water flowing," Kevin instead was doling out insanely syncopated d'n'b.

Word spread quickly. Seattle resident superstars were checking him out. Michael Shrieve, drummer for Santana for many years and lover of drum'n'bass, took him under his wing and showed him off to anybody and everybody: Andy Summers of the Police, Bill Frisell, Amon Tobin, Jack Dejohnette, Will Calhoun, and many more. Kevin at this time was playing an amazing next-generation drumkit: a custom half-acoustic, half electronic drum kit with one diabolically huge kick drum, one insanely tiny kick drum, three snares, a multitude of trashy sounding cymbals & saw blades, a few electronic drum pads and all the acoustic drums set to electronic triggers. His band at the time -still ahead of it's time- was the all-improvisatory avant-garde drum'n'bass trio Siamese. They toured the country multiple times in '02 and '03, bringing down the house in San Francisco at latenight afterparties and raves; in New Orleans during Jazzfest; opening for LTJ Bukem and MC Conrad in Portland; and, put simply, slaying nay-sayers and dropping the jaws of industry, musicians and fans nationally by performing astonishingly long sets of uptempo jungle and d'n'b without set breaks -without even breaks between songs. Again, seeing is believing.

Throughout this timeframe Kevin was always recording his own material, which is now seeing the light of day with his present project "that will never break up" -KJ Sawka. Mostly IDM-based and reminiscent of an uptempo Ninja-Tune-like style, the tracks on Synchronized Decompression should evoke the pioneering work of Sawka's main influences: Amon Tobin and Squarepusher, with a bit of grit a la Dieselboy. Using some of Seattle's most widely-known underground female singers, they bring a balance of Seattle darkness, moodiness and beauty. Live and in the dj scene, Sawka is pushing the envelope with his one-man balls-to-the-wall dancefloor show, which now does include a laptop, samplers, loops, and a rack of gear to produce a full-on production -plus projections, live-action cameras, and intelligent lighting (be on the lookout for some online-only live tracks released in the weeks prior to Synchronized Decompression). For many live music venue gigs, Kevin also employs a full band like heard on the upcoming single Subconnectors -featuring ethereal female vocals, a keyboardist, and a cellist performing similar material in an in-your-face way that only the reverse-engineering, seemingly bionic Mr. Sawka can bring.

Welcome, to the 21st Century.

Also supporting are Electrokid and Jason Philips.

Pala is located at 105 NW 3rd Ave in downtown Portland. The cover will be $3. The music starts at 9pm. There will be food and drink specials all night. Please bring your id as this is a 21+ affair.

Who's got the baddest crew?
This is going to be a full-on, ninja squad vs. zombie cult vs. (whoever you are here...) non-harmful, tribal warfare based on the proceedures of the "unread/unwritten guide to intercommunal protocol and behavior."

Games follow these general guidelines:
Tribes make a flag with their own icon/symbol/insignia on both faces.
Flags are to be hung in a reachable public space frequented or facilitated by members of the tribe.
Every active member needs to carry 1 red sharpie and wear their tribal insignia.
Tagging an opponent with a red sharpie (anywhere on the opponent's skin or clothing) marks them as inactive for one full day.
Game ends when a tribe collects all flags from opposing tribes.
One flag can be taken at a time by each member.
If a tribes flag is taken, the only flag that tribe can seek is their own.
If a flag is taken, all tribes must be notified.
To win the game, a tribe must collect all flags within a week of obtaining their first flag

For a full explanation of the rules and policies join the Ninja Playground tribe.
